This is one of those albums that a buddy turned me onto in high school. This is a GREAT album. Whether you are into rock, funk, punk, or a fusion of all of the above, it does not disappoint.

At times, I''m reminded of the mastery of Primus. Both the drummer and bass player put forth equal feats of dexterity and mastery on this album as Primus does on "Sailing the Seas of Cheese".

I am a bit biased since I sort of "grew up" on it, but there is some really, really good material on this record not to be missed.

Firehose put a few more out after this one that didn''t impress me quite as much, but this is a truly excellent album in all respects. 5 stars ALL THE WAY.

A friend introduced me to the melodic, powerful, inspiring music of fIREHOSE some years ago. To this day, they remain one of my favorite bands. I''d have to agree that every song on here is worth it from beginning to end, but if I had to chose one, it would be ''Things Could Turn Around''. ''Locked In'' is also another favoorite of mine.

fIREHOSE is by far one of the best folk/post-punk bands of all time, bar-none. Do yourself a favor: buy this album, put it on at a party, and watch the reaction. People will come up to you and ask, "Who is this playing?" It never fails.

I like this album but some track on it are a little weak. It clearly still has a Minutemen feel to some of the songs, Brave Captain is a great example. I don''t necessarily think that''s a bad thing. I think they were still trying to find their own new groove.

Chemical Wire starts out very strong with an awesome groove you could dance, bop your head or even mosh to.The ending gets a little odd, I wish they could have ended it just as strong as it started.

Another Theory Shot to S*** is another great song, but the ending just throws me off. I get it when bands try to be weird and different or whatever, but I think it''s more important to convey an emotional great groove if that makes any sense.

Choose Any Memory has such a feel good vibe. Very grooving and a good rock and roll swing with their spice added. Only thing I can''t stand about it is the vocal overdubs on the chorus. A little piercing sounding to me.

The Candle and the Flame is another great one! George is great on the drums, but they all do a great job on their parts. The guitar sounds a little lifeless in the chorus but that could be the fact that it''s from a CD and not the Vinyl. SST record has been known to not Remaster any of their catalog. I have no respect for Greg Ginn and SST records. I have a good feeling this album will sound a lot better sonically on Vinyl.

I recommend this CD, especially to any hardcore Minuteman fan. Get it!

This is the debut album by fIREHOSE released on SST Records in 1986, fIREHOSE were a trio with Ed Crawford (guitar/vocals), with the two Minutemen George Hurley (drums) and Mike Watt (bass)

The music on this debut is a mix of funk, jazz, folk and rock, not hardcore punk like Hurley and Watt''s Minutemen period and all the songs are sung by newcomer Ed Crawford and he even wrote or co-wrote half the songs, 7 in total.

Every song on this debut is good, straight from the opening track ''Brave Captain'', hence my big five stars, after this they released 4 more albums between 1987 - 1993, the latter two for Columbia Records before disbanding in 1994.

Very good album

I listened to this album in a phase in the 90''s and came back to buy it this year. I especially like the 2nd half of the album. It is upbeat and fast paced for the most part, and a good driving CD/MP3.

Fantastic album from a criminally overlooked band. Sure the Minutemen were absolutely seminal and a huge influence, but don''t overlook the follow up after D. Boon''s passing. This is a great album to start with.

I find it hard to believe that I listened to the same album as the other reviewers. When I first saw the playing time of a little over thirty-three minutes I thought that was pretty poor for vinyl, let alone a CD. However, having spent the longest half hour of my life listening to it, I wished it had been a great deal shorter. Most tracks begin with electric guitar and singing, as you would expect, but then that will suddenly stop for no apparent reason and a very slow note picking exercise will ensue on an acoustic before the singer begins a tedious monologue in the style, he seems to think, of Jim Morrison. Unfortunately he does not have the poetic sensibility of Jim and in any case Morrison did not do this on pretty well every track on an album, but only occasionally. The singer''s recitation is neither interesting or profound, but tedious second-rate drivel. If I could give this album less than one start I would: if you see it on sale for a penny, don''t waste your money, as it is not worth the price of the postage. If this is typical of Firehose, then they richly deserve to remain in the void of obscurity where they now reside.
